How to clean your diamond ring
Our hands come in contact with lotions, oil, powder, gels, creams and even dirt. All this gets into the diamond rings on our fingers and takes the sparkle away leaving it dull and lusterless. Although diamonds are the hardest substance known, they have a coating that is applied to enhance them. This is destroyed by harsh cleansers and vigorous scrubbing. You therefore need to know how to clean your diamond carefully without damaging it.
How to effectively clean diamonds
Soak your diamond ring in warm water with mild liquid detergent to loosen the dirt. Lightly clean it with a soft bristle brush to remove the dirt. Shake it in the mild soapy water again and then rinse it thoroughly in warm water. Close the drain to keep from losing it. Dry the ring with a lint-free cloth.
Cleaning unfilled and filled diamonds
Diamonds that have not been fracture filled can be cleaned with a solution of ammonia and water. Use mild liquid detergent solution for fracture filled diamonds, because ammonia can ultimately cloud or remove the coating covering the stone.
Cleaning other gemstones
Always clean a piece of jewelry keeping the softest gem in mind. Use the method to clean soft gemstones when cleaning an item with mixed stones.
Chemicals
Protect your jewelry from harsh chemicals. Always wear gloves or remove all hand jewelry when working with any sort of chemicals like chlorine, dyes, etc.
